Okay, I hate the way these are laid out on this page, but I'm going to have to just live with it because I can't seem to fix it. The off white column is the old column and the brown one is the color I painted it tonight. I have dreamed of painting this column brown ever since I painted the mantel brown. The brown is not glossy the paint had not dried when I took the picture. Now, I don't know if I like it.

My vote is for brown. I like the way it makes the post stand out, like you mean for it to be there. The cream makes it look like you are trying to hide it.
I like the white , but what do I know I'am not interior design savy by any means !just one mans opinion
I think it depends on the color you paint the hall. The color you paint the column can pull it all together.
Hmmm....right now the brown doesn't match the wall colors as much as the white does..but the brown makes the column stand out more.
So right now I'd say the white....but like your mom said...it depends on the color the walls will be.
I like the white. It goes with the white baseboards and trim.
