Movie Review

Monday night was the BCS National Championship and Bo didn't really want to watch it. You see he is an Alabama fan and he just couldn't see Auburn in this game. I know that it sounds crazy and you probably have to live in Alabama to understand it. So we went to the movies. His choice. Next time it is my choice.
We ended up seeing True Grit. Since westerns are not my favorite kind of movie I wasn't really looking forward to it, but I went anyway.
I have to say I really liked this movie. It had some funny parts in it and as a woman I had to love the grit and determination in Mattie Ross' strong character. Hailee Steinfeld was great in this movie and really held her own against Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. I would highly recommend this movie and I know that I will watch it again when it comes to DVD and Blue Ray.

Percy Jackson

Okay, we are still cleaning out our house to get ready for a yard sale this weekend. We did make time to watch a movie on Friday night.
We rented Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Needless to say this was not my choice, but Bo's choice. Bo has always been into Greek Mythology so this movie was right up his ally. I would say that it would help that you know something about Greek Mythology or have read these books. I think boys would love this movie. I loved that this movie was rated PG with a lot of action and adventure that boys would love. I didn't find it a true waste of time, but it wasn't something I would have picked.

Did You Hear About the Morgans?

I had such high hopes for this movie because I love both Hugh Grant and SJP. This movie was a predictable Romantic Comedy of a misplaced couple heading from the city to the country. They are also in a bad place in their relationship. There were several times that I thought that the movie got lost and wasn't sure were it wanted to go.
Hugh Grant was excellent as always. But then again he does play the same character over and over again. SJP's character was very unlikeable and she wined a lot, and I hate to save that since I love her so much as Carrie Bradshaw.
As romantic comedies go this is the standard fair. Not the best and not the worse I've seen. Would I watch it again? Probably Not.

The Princess and the Frog

Bo and I have watched several movies in the last couple of days. What can I say there hasn't been much to watch on TV. Well, a couple of weeks ago I got The Princess and the Frog at a really good deal like I mean after mail in rebates it will cost me $3.00 so I figured why not.

After watching this movie I'm not sure at what age I would let my kids (if I had any) watch this movie. You see I grew up in house were my parents watched most of the movies before my brother and I could and I don't know if this one would pass because of how scary some of the magic is. I mean it is kind of spooky even for Disney Magic. Bo even said he didn't know what age child should watch this movie. The only negative about this movie would be the scary magic.

There were several things that I absolutly loved about this movie:

First -it is set in New Orleans. I have been to New Orleans twice and even thought I don't ever have to go back I realize that it is the perfect city to set this movie. Nothing against New Orleans but I don't drink and I don't gamble. I have already done several tours and I have gone to the aquarium and on the river boat. I do love the architecture and the food is amazing. Maybe I just need some time in between my visits. The last time we went Bo and I did not get along at all with each other and Alabama lost their game so all around it wasn't a good trip.

Second - the music. Like most Disney animation it is wonderful, but the music in this movie sets it a part as one of the best. It helps that had a lot of jazz, and that New Orleans has a lot of wonderful places to listen to music.

Third- the message. I loved the message of hard work and saving money. Tiana also had to learn that a little fun mixed in makes life so much better.

Forth - Mama Odie - she was perfect and I loved the scenes with her in them. She really stole the show in my opinion.

Overall I thought that this was a good movie and I would definitely watch it again. I'm glad that I purchased it and that it is a part of my Disney movie collection.

Movie Reviews

This weekend Bo and I watched two movies and the Super Bowl. Needless to say we didn't get much done because we watched a lot of TV.

Temple Grandin was on HBO Saturday night, and I was really looking forward to watching it. There are times when I complain about the cost of HBO and then a movie likes this comes along and it reminds me why we pay for HBO. Temple Grandin is one of those movies that you continue to think about way after you have seen it. Claire Danes did a wonderful job. This movie was wonderfully made. Temple Grandin is Autistic and I loved the way the movie showed how she visualises things. It made me want to learn more about Temple Grandin, and how she improved the treatment of cows when they went to slaughter. Bo, who was a butcher while in college, found this very interesting. If you get HBO or if this comes to DVD it is a definite watch.

The other movie we watched was Night at the Museum 2. Let me say that this is not as good as the first one, but enjoyable. It is a good non thinking movie. I'm glad that we only paid a $1.00 for it from red box, which if you haven't checked out red box yet you need to.

AVATAR

If I were a movie critic, I would AVATAR two thumbs up!

I wouldn't call myself a science fiction fan. Actually, I'm far from it, but I did go see Star Wars this year and this past weekend I saw AVATAR twice. I LOVED it both times. Once Bo and I saw it together and then his teenage cousins came to town for Christmas and they wanted to see it so we took them. Let me just say I have only gone to see one other movie in the theater twice and it was Titanic. So I guess James Cameron is what I would consider a good story teller.
Back to AVATAR, WOW it is visually stunning! I love the use of color and how wonderful it would be to sew in those vibrant colors.
We went to see it in 3D which I liked, but some of the scenes seemed dark from the glasses. I actually took them off a few times just to see how much color and light came from the screen. Which seemed like a lot more without the glasses.
AVATAR is like 3 hours long, but you never really think about the time because it continues to go quickly. I know a lot of people are saying the story line is weak, but it is definitely not the worst I have seen. I actually thought it was pretty good.
Bo's family discussed this movie on Christmas day and I made the statement that I don't know if I will like this movie as much in 5 years, but that I really enjoyed it right now because it was different and it made me want to go to the movies. I mean in a sea of mediocrity and sameness this movie stood out. Way to go James Cameron and AVATAR!

Debbie Macomber's Mrs. Miracle

Winter in South Alabama only means one thing - Rain and then maybe some more rain. So we have been stuck inside a lot lately. I know I should be crafting, but instead I'm watching Christmas movies.

Saturday, we went to see Bo's family to celebrate his birthday with them. Since it was raining we were inside. I asked nicely if we could not watch a western (what his dad prefers to watch) if we could watch a Christmas movie instead. His dad said he didn't care because he was going to take a nap on his chair in front of the TV.

So,we watchedDebbie Macomber's Mrs. Miracle on Hallmark. Okay basically I watched the entire movie, but Bo's dad sometime into his nap asked if Mrs. Miracle was an angel. So I think he listened to most of the movie. Bo and his mom were in and out of the living room, but wanted to know what was going on. I think overall we all enjoyed this movie and it was way better than a 50 year old western.

It was really good, and Doris Roberts was excellent. I would have to say I have seen better child actors, but they still did an okay job.
I did explain to Bo that most Christmas movies have the same plot - a tragic event, some mysterious person comes into main characters life, main character finds love, main character works out problems, it snows, mystery person leaves without main character knowing. This movie pretty much follows that line of events. But I liked it, just like I like most Christmas movies.

So do you have movies to recommend watch while it is raining out?

I should also say I got this picture from the TV Guide website.

Julie & Julia

Julie and Julia is a good movie. Actually, Bo and I loved half of the movie. We loved the part about Julia Child. We really wished the entire movie was about her. I love Amy Adams but her character seems to be uninteresting and whinny compared to Julia Child. I am glad I watched this movie, but I don't have to see it again.

The Blind Side

On Wednesday night Bo and I went see The Blind Side. Bo's choice for his Birthday, but I would have also choosen this movie if I had choosen. There were only about 10 people in the theater, but this was an odd night to go see a movie. Bo and I both really enjoyed it, and if movies weren't $18.50 for two people to go see one, we probable would go again. I will definitely buy this when it comes out on DVD.
This movie made me cry, it me laugh, and it made me think about how amazing this family actually was. In so many ways it made me think about what I am doing to help out another, and could I or would I ever be brave enough to take in some one that I know needed me to help them. Lee Ann wasn't just helping someone by handing over a check. She changed her life to help another individual.
Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite actress and she did a great job. Tim McCraw was also very convincing as the husband. But there was one who stole the show: Jae Head, who plays S.J., was just wonderful and handled every scene he was in with an amazing ability to act.
I have to say as a fan of the SEC it was fun to see all the coaches in this movie even if they were no longer at the school that they were recruiting for in the movie. In some ways that would seem really odd to me.
Michael Oher must be a very special person to have changed so many peoples lives not only the Tuohy's, but also those individuals at his school.
